Admissions

enrollment process

Each applicant and his/her parent(s) must satisfy the following enrollment requirements. The purpose of these assessment tools is to gain information for the applying family and for the school in order to determine whether there is a good match between the strengths and needs of the students and the vision of the school.

These activities were designed to give the student an indication of the kind of work we do at the River School and to illuminate any difficulties your child might have. If there are concerns, preadmission conferences are held to determine the kinds of supports that will be needed upon enrollment.

  1. The Information Session: The Enrollment process begins with the student and his/her parent attending ONE of the following MANDATORY Information Sessions. For 2012-2013, these sessions will take place on:
    • Thursday, January 12th, Evans Hall, 6:30-8:00pm
    • Wednesday, January 18th, Evans Hall, 6:30-8:00pm
    • Thursday, January 26th, In the Library, 6:30-8:00pm

Application packets containing the required forms and questionnaires are distributed at the Information Session and the Principal gives an overview of the River School experience.
  2. The Art Project: The student applicant will create a collage that is either a self-portrait or an image that symbolizes one or more of his/her character or personality traits.
  3. The Written Reflection: The student must write a 300 word essay that answers the question: "How does your collage show who you are?"
  4. The Student Questionnaire
  5. The Parent Questionnaire
  6. Open Enrollment Form: All current NVUSD students in elementary school can pick up their open enrollment form at their current elementary school and the form gets turned in to the elementary school, but we need a copy of it (unsigned) in the application packet.

NOTE: Completed packets must arrive at the River School office by Tuesday, January 31st at 3:30pm.

  7. Shadowing: If your child is interested in shadowing a current 6th grader, please call 253-6813.

Enrollment consists of 120 students in each grade. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces, a public lottery of qualified applicants will be held and a waiting list will be established.

Please call 253-6813 if you have any further questions.
