NAPA VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

HIGH SCHOOL OPEN ENROLLMENT

Information Bulletin

For the 2010-2011 School Year

School of Residence

Student’s whose legal residence is within Board established school attendance boundaries (school of residence) are assigned to and have a priority right to attend their school of residence.  Students shall not be displaced by the attendance of a student not residing within that school's attendance boundaries.

Please note that high school attendance areas have changed for the 2010-2011 school year due to the opening of American Canyon High School and the need to balance enrollment at Napa and Vintage High Schools.

Open Enrollment to a High School other than High School of Residence

The District has adopted an open enrollment policy which provides the opportunity for parents/guardians and their students to apply to attend a high “school of choice” other than their school of residence during an annual open enrollment period.

The open enrollment period will be January 11 through January 29, 2010.  Applications must be received no later than Friday, January 29, 2010, at 3:30 p.m. to be included in the random selection process for the 2010-2011 school year.    Open enrollment applications are available at your middle school and must be submitted to your middle school.

Napa High School is closed for open enrollment for grades 9 and 10 with limited space available for grades 11 and 12. Vintage High School will have space available for open enrollment for grades 9 – 12 for Napa residents only.  New Technology High School does not have an attendance area.  All applicants to New Technology High School must apply through open enrollment.  American Canyon High School 9th and 10th graders must attend American Canyon High School.  Napa residents may open enroll to American Canyon High School if space is available.  Transportation will not be provided.

Should requests for open enrollment exceed the number of openings at the available “schools of choice”, selection of open enrollment applicants will be made through a random unbiased lottery process conducted by the Napa Valley Unified School District.

If approved, an open enrolled student becomes a student of the “school of choice” through the 12th grade.  Once approved, the student does not have automatic rights to return to his/her original school of residence.  If the student desires to return to the original school of residence, the parent/guardian must reapply through the annual open enrollment process.

The District provides bus transportation only for students who reside beyond designated walking distances within established school attendance areas.  The parent/guardian of a successful open enrollment applicant must provide transportation to and from the “school of choice”.
